Digitalist Group

Mission: CV photos that you love to use

April – May 2024

Digitalist Group's Helsinki office needed new CV photos for their whole staff to use on the website and client proposals. They needed to be in line with the company's recently unveiled new brand look, tailored to each individual yet also aligned as a whole set.

Before beginning our project, we visited Digitalist in Hakaniemi to discuss their needs and wishes. As most of their team works in a hybrid format, it was important to plan photoshoots in a way that allows everyone a chance to take part without major disruption to their daily work. We ended up agreeing on five half-day sessions across three calendar weeks, and timed a few of them to coincide with other in-office happenings that people would be likely to attend. We also made sure there were both morning and afternoon shoots to accommodate different kinds of schedules.

In addition to this, we agreed to arrange a makeup artist to join us for basic touch-ups like preventing shiny bald heads or rogue strands of hair, which would help keep editing as light as possible.

GOALS FOR THE CV PHOTOSHOOTS
  • CV photos that are a joy to use for the individual, and form a cohesive and harmonious gallery of team members
  • two final portraits per person, both in Black & White to suit Digitalist's new branding, and in full colour

  • CV photos that are a joy to use for the individual, and form a cohesive and harmonious gallery of team members
  • two final portraits per person, both in Black & White to suit Digitalist's new branding, and in full colour
Phase 1

Introductions

Phase 1

Introductions

Many find posing in front of the camera stressful, so it was important to create a connection from the start to make it easier to relax in the shoot. So we went to introduce ourselves in Digitalist's weekly breakfast meeting, so they could get an idea of what kind of people will be taking their photos.

During the meeting Negin already snapped some casual test shots, getting people used to her camera's presence. We also got some initial questions & answers out of the way, but the most important thing was to spark a connection and make it easier to approach us with anything during the project.

Phase 2

Preparations

Phase 2

Preparations

To help us create a relaxed and emotionally safe atmosphere for the sessions, we also always make a tailored playlist, to which people could also add their requests – from certain songs or artists to nature sounds or anything that might help them feel at ease. For when there were none, we selected music with a style, theme and tempo that's conducive to both calming the nerves and creating an uplifting mood.

Phase 3

Photoshoots

Phase 3

Photoshoots

We arrived into each photoshoot day as a team of 3 – Negin behind the camera, her sister Zahra as the makeup artist, and Jimmy as assistant and DJ. We set up our temporary studio with lights and backdrop in a meeting room at the Digitalist office, Zahra prepared a makeup table in the corner, and right by the entrance we had a fruit bowl and biscuits for mood and energy boost. Each day had its own playlist, and in addition to the models' own requests, audience favourites included the Macarena, Rihanna, and many wonderfully corny 80's classics. One model's colleague had secretly added Bavarian yodeling to his requests, which did exactly what it was supposed to when it boomed out of the speakers – awakened a hearty laugh and released the tension in the shoulders for a more relaxed stance. 😃

We marked the spot for posing with tape on the floor, and the models had a choice to stand, sit on a chair, or perch on a higher stool. Most of them tried all three. In addition to the music, the mood was kept light and positive with casual banter and a thought experiment on what kind of pose would look great on the cover of their first book. The framing was flexible between models to allow for their personal style to come through, but we also ensured consistency by taking at least one more traditional half-body shot. Out of these, it would always be easy to pick the right crop for the occasion.

Negin's warm and direct approach helped people feel at ease, and she showed them the photos in camera as the session went on. This both helped them feel confident about the kind of photos they'd be getting, but also gave the chance to try new things if the first photos were missing that special something.

Phase 4

Selections and editing

Phase 4

Selections and editing

After going through the raw materials, we created a personal, password-protected proofing gallery for everyone. Into these, we uploaded only the most successful shots, having pruned away the ones with their eyes closed or their mouth awkwardly open.

Light instructions at the top of the gallery directed them to mark their choices, and if they wanted, leave some comments about them or wishes for the editing. As everyone had had the chance to already peek at their photos in the session and tell us their favourites already, there weren't many comments or editing requests at this point, just a few little notes to soften some wrinkles.

As per our agreement, everyone had two photos to choose, but not everyone could narrow it down to just two, so we also got some orders for additional photos.

Outcome

A gallery of amazing people

The chosen portraits were finalised to allow each individual to shine as themselves, but also to create a visually consistent gallery when put together. Every portrait was made into a black & white version to fit the new branding as well as a full colour version. Both versions were delivered as full resolution print ready files and as lighter versions for use on screens, making a total of four image files per portrait.

You exceeded all my expectations. Comms, planning, prepping, execution and of course taking the pictures! Everyone was very happy with the sessions and the results. Combined with your personality, this hardly gets any better.
